Organization of studies at USAMVBT
What is the cost, the duration, and the language of the studies? Is the diploma recognized internationally?
Foreign Sections
The USVT has 2 foreign sections for Veterinary Medicine:
-
French section(opened in 2018): 45 places, in French for 6-year-olds.
-
English section: 30 places, in English for 6 year olds.
Duration
In Romania, veterinary studies last another 6 years after obtaining the BAC. Here, it is not possible to enter directly into the 2nd or 3rd year, with the exception of a person who has already done veterinary studies. Let's start from the principle that when we love, we don't count!
Cost
The cost of studies is 5500€/year (for 6 year olds) for the French and English sections.
It is to be expected that the price will increase until it catches up with the Universities of Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest, i.e. tuition fees of around 6000€/year._cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_
Acknowledgement
diploma
The diploma is recognized throughout Europe thanks to the Bologna Process (Hey! Pasta for lunch?), the standardization system for higher education in Europe, Turkey and Russia with its LMD system (Licence Master Doctorat) and its ECTS credits (TMTC, or not...).
EAEVE
USAMVBT has been EAEVE accredited since 2010 (lost in 2020 but re-obtained in 2022).
The EAEVE (Hum hum hum, we have to take our best English accent: "European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education"), is a private organization whose objective is to assess, promote and further develop the quality and level of establishments teaching Veterinary Medicine, but not limited to, Member States of the European Union. The EAEVE is not what is used for the recognition of the diploma in Europe, it is the Bologna Process, mentioned above, which allows this recognition!
Material to have
In Timişoara, you can buy the equipment on the spot in the stores TAG, specialized in the sale of equipment of all kinds (gowns, clinical uniforms, stethoscopes, etc.). There are three in Timişoara: Zona Sinaia: Str. December 16, 1989 (state bus 33); Zona Clinicilor: Str. E. Ungureanu, No. 17; Spitalul Judetean: Str. Dr. Ioan Muresan, Nr 109.
The equipment necessary during the 6 years of study and which will make you kings and queens of the undermining are:
-
1st year: White coat (for practical work in laboratories or in the anatomy room)
-
2nd year: Rain boots and overalls/overalls (for possible outings to the farm where dung showers can be frequent...)
-
3rd year: stethoscope, medical outfit (t-shirt and pants), clinic shoes and dissection kit (wow, the same outfit as in Grey's Anatomy is so classy!)
Organization of studies at USAMVBT
How does the academic year unfold with the different semesters, vacations, exams, compulsory internships?
back to school
The start of the school year takes place the first week of October.
organization of the year
The academic year is divided into 2 semesters:
-
Winter semester: October - January with a 3 week exam session (for approximately 6 to 8 exams) in February.
-
Summer semester: March - May with a 3 week exam session (for approximately 6 to 8 exams) in June.
Each semester lasts 14 weeks.
Course
The courses are divided into two parts: lectures (CM) and practical work (TP). In the first year, the practical work is not yet very advanced from a “medical” point of view and you will rather be led to observe as in Anatomy or Histology and to carry out some simple experiments as in Chemistry or Physics.
There are approximately 8 subjects on average per semester with generally 2 hours of CM and 3 hours of practical work per subject. Attendance for labs is mandatory.
Most teachers give us access to their course materials (slideshows, PDF, extracts from books, etc.). This allows you to pick up the information once the lessons are over (it doesn't exempt you from trying to follow during their lessons though XD).
Not all the teachers speak French very well yet (the section is still quite young here) so don't hesitate to ask them questions, sometimes in English, which is the language they master best apart from Romanian, to fully understand the content of a course (with patience you can always make yourself understood ;D). Of course, you will also be able to ask your questions to the great students of the upper classes who have already had these courses.
Mandatory internships
Free compulsory internships are to be carried out during the course. This can be done anywhere in the world, with the possibility of doing it via Erasmus. It can also be done several times and in different places (eg: 1 week at Christmas with Dr Lapinou + 2 weeks in the summer with Dr Pol, if you have Dr Pol's reference you are made for this job and if not… GO WATCH THIS SERIES!!!).
Here is a littlerecaps mandatory internships depending on the year! :
-
1st/2nd/3rd year: 3 weeks of mandatory free internships per year.
-
4th year: 4 weeks of mandatory free internships.
-
5th/6th year: The guards act as internship hours.
-
6th year: Compulsory internship in a slaughterhouse.
Exams
For the majority, MCQs of 1 hour with 45 questions andsome orals (more orals in EN section than FR).
If you go tocatch-ups and you fail 2 sessions, you will have the opportunity to catch up again later atother sessions but be careful, it will be paying (“Your wallet full you want, so don't go to the September session you have to” Master Yoda).
In addition to these exam sessions, there are from time to time continuous control exams, really very affordable by providing adequate work, also MCQ type or oral during the semester.
Holidays
Summer holidays take place in the months of July, August and September (and yes, you're not dreaming, 3 full months to brown your summer bodies and drink your best mojitos, the foot!).
For Christmas we have 3 weeks and at the end of April or beginning of May we have 1week.
In addition, after the partials, the FAC leaves a week dedicated to catch-ups. So, this can add a significant week of vacation at the end of February for those who don't have any remedial courses (an old proverb says: "If skiing at the end of February you plan to go have fun, your exams you will need pass successfully”).

What USAMVBT offers
What does the university offer in terms of specialties and practice?
The specialties
In France, the last year is devoted to further study in a clinical field (canine, rural, equine, etc.). In Romania, and in other European countries in general, there is not this "in-depth" system, the diploma is more general! a “module” of 5 credits in the final year which allows you to choose between 3 areas that can correspond to “mini-depth”:
-
Farm animals(for those who like the great outdoors)
-
Pets, sports and exotic animals(for those who like doggies and kitties, but also serpentous and bunnies)
-
Animal production and food security(for those who like to eat a good rare steak without being afraid of getting a tapeworm)
The species studied
The reference species is the Horse (Equus ferus caballus), this means that the basic study is done on this animal. Then we study by comparison mainly the Large ruminants represented by Bovines (bos taurus), then Small ruminants, i.e. sheep (Ovis aries) and Goats (Capra hircus), Pigs (sus domesticus), the dog (Canis lupus familiaris), cat (Felis silvestris catus), and to a lesser extent the Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus)! (FYI: we took out the scientific names just to show off) Occasionally, we can study the donkey as well as laboratory animals.
For the NAC, we have small mammals which are covered in “Biology of Laboratory Animals” in the 1st year and the option “Pathology of Laboratory Animals and Exotic Species” in the final year. Birds, reptiles and wild species will be little discussed in general. But as with most veterinary training in Europe, you have to rely above all on your experience outside the FAC for more exotic species.
The practice
For practice, as in all veterinary education establishments, it is above all necessary to rely on internships outside the FAC! But otherwise, here is an overview for the practice according to the year of study:
-
1st year: Laboratory manipulations (observations under the microscope, dosages, density measurements…) and fiddling with bones, muscles and organs in Anatomy (Kevin! Take your finger out of the nose of the cow's head!)
-
2nd year: Beginning of dissections (if you are like: “I want to cut, I want to cut… I WANT TO CUT!!!”, please stay away from us)
-
3rd year: Start of basic manipulations on living animals in Semiology (it's not just about hugging the little doggie that he's so cute <3)
-
4th year: Beginning of Clinical Sciences with some practical work in the Faculty Clinic (Kevin, it's you who castrated this dog when it's a female?!)
-
5th/6th year: Clinic (surgery, guards, hygiene regulations… you can then almost say: “Hello, I am the Doctor” #Stylish)
Erasmus
The Facultatea de Medicină Veterinară din Timişoara (it has become a habit, sorry) offers the Erasmus + program. Thus, you will have the possibility of doing internships of at least 2 months in another country while benefiting from a grant or leaving for a semester or even 1 year in another European veterinary faculty which participates in the program.
Note that if you have French nationality, you will not be able to do this exchange with one of the four ENVs in France (because it is not in the values of Erasmus), even if our studies take place in Romania. However, it is possible to benefit from the ERASMUS scholarship for internships in France, with the conditions of being far enough from your home in France and doing at least 2 consecutive months. To find out more and take the steps, you can go to the ERASMUS office of the University.
USVT partner veterinary faculties:
-
Kayseri (University Erciyes) | Turkey
-
Bnro (Veterinární univerzita Brno) | Czech Republic
Exemption of materials
The exemption of subjects is not automatic, you will have to ask your teacher for the desired subject (be careful, the teacher and not the administration) and show him your transcripts. The teacher will decide whether or not he wishes to exempt you.
Note that Romania (like many other countries) does not know the system of preparation and BTS / DUT. For the subject exemption, the teacher can then simply not recognize the equivalence, so students who have completed a license have a better chance of achieving their goals!
Finally, think before asking for the equivalence, that your grade in converted higher education out of 10 in Romania will generally be lower than the one you can obtain by passing the exams (the exams being generally easier in Romania than in France) .
